Markets are powerful tools that can speed adoption of new technologies and make them better. But markets, on their own, are not enough. Legislation, international cooperation, sustained consumer and popular pressure, and other levers are extremely important as well.

A former cosmologist, Dr. Marvel received a PhD in theoretical physics from Cambridge University. She led the “Climate Trends” chapter in the U.S. government’s Fifth National Climate Assessment and testified before Congress. Marvel has given talks in places as diverse as comedy clubs, prisons and the TED main stage. She has written for Scientific American and appeared on Meet the Press and the Ezra Klein Show. Kirkus Reviews described her new book Human Nature: Nine Ways to Feel About Our Changing Planet as a “highly readable argument for tackling climate change that reckons with both cold hard facts and the human heart.”
