Business leaders can make an unwavering commitment to scientific integrity within their companies and publicly. They can make it crystal clear that they will not tolerate behaviors that aim to interfere or tamper with research and data.
An interview with Dr. Pallavi Phartiyal, Vice President of Programs, Policy & Advocacy at the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS), which prioritizes rigorous independent science with a focus on solutions and advocating for a healthy, safe, and just future. In her role, she works to ensure UCS’ positions and solutions are informed by robust, independent, and equity-informed scientific analysis. Dr. Phartiyal has also served as the deputy executive director at Rainforest Action Network (RAN). Prior to that, back at UCS, she helped launch the Center for Science and Democracy, where she advocated for science-based policymaking and for the public’s access to robust scientific information and data to inform decisions. Previously, she was with the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) where she worked with research and policy professionals to provide review and guidance for academic institutions, federal and state agencies to improve research and engineering competitiveness and education pathways.
Dr. Phartiyal is on the Board of American Rivers, is a vice-Chair on the board of Oil Change International, and co-chairs the steering committee of Green Leadership Trust. She has served on the advisory council for the Bay Area Air Quality Management District. She is a senior fellow with the Environmental Leadership Program (ELP).
